Editor’s Letter: Seeking Serenity

Welcome to Début, Summer 2026.

Editor-in-Chief, Laina Whitney Faber

There’s something about summer that has always felt like mine. I’m a summer baby, so the season arrives each year hand-in-hand with my birthday — a double celebration, a personal new year of sorts. But this summer, I’m after something quieter than candles and confetti. This season, I’m seeking serenity.

Summer 2026, for me, is about lazy days that soften the noise — the constant hum of work, family, the endless responsibilities of parenting and showing up for everyone. It’s about carving out stillness in the middle of all of it. And in many ways, that’s the spirit of this entire issue.

Début has been my first baby, humming along in the background of my life for years now, quietly becoming what it was meant to be. It’s taken a few forms to get here — this is not the first time Début has made its entrance — but this feels like the one that finally sticks. My hope is that this time, it finds you, and many more like you.

So here’s a little of what’s inside. In Nouveau, our culture pages, I’d point you first to Anya Paintsil’s textile portraits — women rendered entirely at ease, which felt like the perfect note to open on. Over in Dé Beauté, start with In Praise of the Empty Morning — a gentle argument for doing less this season. And in Fashion, the 6 Summer Wardrobe Essentials is your shortcut to a summer wardrobe that works as hard, and rests as easily, as you do.

However you spend these months, my wish for you is simple: enjoy your summer. Take the trip. Lie in the sun. Let your mind rest as much as your body does. The work will be there when you get back — and you’ll meet it better for having stepped away.

We’ll see you again when the light shifts. Our Fall issue arrives August 23rd, with all the layered, golden-hour dressing the season calls for. Until then — go be still.
